Importance of CT scanning in All-on-4 Implants

Are you planning to have All on 4 implants? If so, then you will have to talk to your dentist to find out if you are the right candidate for the procedure. It is actually a long process that may require CT scanning. You may be worried about the amount of radiation as well as the costs associated. An important question you might have, is whether a CT scan is actually needed? Most dentists will ask you to go for a CT scan before all on 4 dental implants where the scan is very important.

What should you know about a CT scan?

Dental cone beam computed tomography (CT) is a special x-ray which requires taking 3-D images. Dental x-rays are done once a year mainly to produce highly focused images and a panoramic x-ray to capture the image of your full jaw. Unless you are suffering from a major oral concern, your dentist will not restrict the panoramic x-rays you need. Also, ultra-low doses are being administered as the least amount needed to deliver the images. Unfortunately, a panoramic x-ray has certain limitations as it is not a 3-D view for all on 4 dental implants.

Reasons to conduct a CT scan for all-on-4 implants

  1. Doctor calculates bone density for performing dental implants – The bone reabsorbs when you suffer from missing teeth. When the bone loss becomes significant, the scan will be able to determine the exact location to place an implant.
  2. Doctor assesses if you are the right candidate for bone augmentation – When you do not have sufficient bone density, all-on-4 implant may not be possible and you may be offered bone grafting. A CT scan is required that will enable the doctor to know the treatment options and to check the progress after your surgery.
  3. Doctor provides exact measurements of your mouth and other dental structure you cannot see – If you have a low sinus cavity the doctor may have to lift it before performing the implants. Having a scan will help him to place implants.
