Digital Dentistry: How 3D Scans Improve Accuracy

Written By

Dr. Andreia Phipps

The days of biting into a tray filled with gooey, gag-inducing impression material are officially over. Modern implant dentistry is digital, precise, and surprisingly comfortable.

At Dental Implants London, we utilize a fully digital workflow. This involves **CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography)** scanning and **Intraoral Digital Scanning**. These technologies allow us to see what is happening beneath the gum and plan your surgery with sub-millimeter accuracy.

The 3D X-Ray (CBCT)

A standard dental X-ray is 2D. It shows height but not width. A CBCT scan gives us a 3D view of your jawbone, nerves, and sinus cavities. This allows us to:

  • Measure the exact volume of bone available.
  • Choose the perfect implant size (width and length) for your unique anatomy.
  • Avoid vital structures like the inferior alveolar nerve, preventing numbness.
  • Detect hidden infections that 2D X-rays might miss.

Computer-Guided Surgery

We can merge your 3D X-ray with a digital scan of your teeth to create a 'Surgical Guide'. This is a custom-printed 3D template that fits over your gums during surgery.

The guide has holes that direct the drill at the exact angle and depth we planned on the computer. This makes the surgery faster, safer, and less invasive (often flapless), leading to quicker healing and less post-op pain.

Digital Impressions

Instead of putty impressions, we use a wand-like camera to scan your teeth and the implant. These digital files are sent instantly to our lab, where your Zirconia crown is designed using CAD/CAM software. The result is a fit that is often far superior to traditional casting methods.
