Teeth whitening

We have several types of professional teeth whitening treatments in London. Some can be done at home while others have to be done at a dental clinic. Whatever type of teeth whitening treatment you choose, contact your dentist to guide you on how to get that brighter and whiter teeth you desire.

Teeth whitening treatment is safe and does not cause a lot of discomforts. Whitening treatments with fewer sensitivity issues are now available, and they improve the colour of the teeth by several shades. Your dentist may not be able to predict the exact shade your teeth will be after whitening but be sure that there would be an improvement after treatment.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is basically a process of bleaching the teeth to make them lighter by some shades. Bear in mind that teeth whitening doesn't work like magic and cannot make your yellow teeth exceptionally white, but the colour of your teeth would get lightened by several shades.

Types of teeth whitening

  • Boutique whitening

This type of whitening is a safe and effective natural tooth lightening procedure. It is a home whitening kit that boosts the overall teeth appearance without damaging or removing the surface of the teeth.

  • Home-based tray teeth whitening.

Your dentist will take your dental impression and mould of your teeth with whitening trays that will be sent to your home with a box of whitening gel (hydrogen peroxide gel of about 10 – 12%). You will place the gel on the trays and wear them for at least 2 – 4 hours a day for 7 – 10 days. The hydrogen peroxide gel slowly produces oxygen molecules that penetrate the outer layer of the teeth (enamel). The oxygen helps tobreakdown the stains and gently whiten the teeth within the few days you wear the tray. This home-based whitening procedure helps you control the whitening process as you are free to stop wearing the whitening trays when you are satisfied with the shade of your teeth.

You do not require any top-up visit after using the whitening trays just like laser whitening. You can keep the whitening trays for almost a year in your fridge and also purchase additional syringes of gel from your dentist at an affordable rate for later use.

Steps in teeth whitening treatment

There are three steps involved in whitening the teeth. They include

  • Step 1

Cleaning the teeth with a preparatory activator and coating them with a bleaching agent

  • Step 2

Applying a mouthguard and high-energy halogen light on the teeth to activate the bleaching agent to avoid damaging the teeth

  • Step 3

Allowing the halogen light work on the teeth for about fifteen minutes. After this, you will have a lighter shade of teeth and free to go home.

Aftercare

After whitening your teeth, they will look lighter by a few shades but may become more porous and susceptible to staining. The following steps will help you keep your teeth white and prevent staining.

  • Brush for a minimum of twice a day using fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove food particles between your teeth
  • Avoid taking coffee, coloured drinks, tea, red wine or dark soda.
  • Avoid eating fruits and food with colourings like cherries, grapes, mustards, blueberry, lollies, dark stews, chocolate, muffins, slushes, spaghetti sauce, and blackberries.
  • Avoid smoking
  • Do not take hot or cold liquid because they damage the teeth by contracting and expanding the teeth, which allow stains to penetrate them.

Cost of tooth whitening

The cost of whitening the teeth varies from one dental clinic to the other, and you have to attend several dental appointments over a few weeks or months. Teeth whitening is not a one-time procedure, although, it is affordable as it helps your teeth remain whiter.

FAQs about teeth whitening

Am I suitable for teeth whitening treatment?

Most people can get their teeth whitened, but people with gum disease or other dental problems like tooth decay may not be suitable for the procedure.

During your initial consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and check if you are the right candidate for teeth whitening.

Will the whitening change my restoration?

No, it will not. Whitening treatment only lightens natural teeth so if you have restorations like dentures, bridges, and fillings, the colour would remain the same.

Can I whiten only a tooth?

Whitening a single dark-coloured tooth would depend on the cause of the change in colour. The cause of the darkness may be a dead nerve, discoloured crown, filling or veneer. Your dentist will find the cause and recommend the appropriate treatment.

How long will teeth whitening take?

If you want your teeth whitened at a dental clinic, it may take about two hours to get finished, but you have to maintain the colour of your teeth with a top-up kit for almost a week for the whitening to last longer.

Home whitening kits may take about 2 – 3 weeks for the teeth to get lighter.

How white will my teeth be after treatment?

How white your teeth will be at the end of your treatment will depend on the colour of your teeth. During your initial appointment, the dentist will tell you how white your teeth can be at the end of your treatment.

How long will my teeth remain white after a treatment?

If your teeth are whitened properly, the effect would be permanent, but you will require top-ups every 6 – 9 months. You can do the top-ups at home by yourself. If you used at-home kits for your whitening, you might also do the top-ups at home.

Does teeth whitening damage the nerve of a tooth?

Teeth whitening does not damage the nerve of a tooth and reports from check-ups after 4 – 7 years has not shown any effect of teeth whitening on the nerve. People who have undergone teeth whitening do not complain about the need for root canal treatment.
