White Filling

Generally, people who practice good oral hygiene and visit their dentist regularly for check-ups would not need fillings. Tooth decay causes discomfort and pain, and if left untreated, it can develop into an abscess which requires treatment by removing the root canal. In this case, the filling is needed to replace the root canal.

A tooth filling is a harmless and simple dental treatment procedure that helps to treat tooth decay and maintain the health of the tooth.

About white fillings

Fillings mostly consist of a combination of some metals. These metals are harmless, but some patients prefer their alternative known as white filling. This is because they look like natural teeth. White fillings can also be used for cosmetic purposes.

White fillings are unique because they have a similar colour to the natural teeth, and they are made of composite resin which is a tooth-coloured plastic combined with silicon dioxide ad glass. White fillings have been in use since the early 1960s for dental purposes. When it was first made, it was used only on the teeth that people see when you smile, but the modern ones can be fitted in any part of the mouth.

rating star iconI was searching for a dentist to do implants treatment. visited Dental Implant London and when I visited the clinic, I found they are so caring and supportive. The dentist explained me the entire process and suggested to stay calm during the treatment. Many thanks!

rating star iconI have had gum disease and as a result have lost quite a few of my teeth. I was coping okay with my upper teeth plate but when I lost my bottom teeth I decided to have implants because bottom dentures were much more difficult to manage. I’m now considering having the upper set replaced with dental implants as well.

How do white fillings work?

The composite resin, which is a better option to the metal combination filling are now in use, and they are more effective and durable.

During your white filling procedure, your dentist will administer a quick-acting anaesthetic to numb the affected area. If you feel nervous, your dentist will try to calm you down first. After administering the anaesthetic with a syringe, the dentist will remove the decayed portion of your tooth using a dental drill then even out any rough edges using a rounded drill. The second drill usually makes a lot of noise, but you do not have to panic as you would feel no pain because of the effect of the anaesthetic.

After the necessary preparation, the dentist will apply the white filling, and it will attach to the enamel of your tooth. The filling is bonded to the tooth, which helps keep the resin in place.

Who needs a white filling?

If you have tooth decay, your dentist may recommend you get a filling. You may decide to get the traditional amalgam metal filling or the white filling. You can get white filling if you would feel uncomfortable when you smile or talk in public because your amalgam filling is noticeable.

It is better to get an inlay if your tooth is completely damaged due to decay or an injury. Using inlays are advisable when the cavity is large for a filling but small to accommodate a crown.

What is the duration for treatment with white filling?

Typically, it takes about thirty minutes to perform a filling procedure. This includes your diagnosis time and administration of the anaesthetic. Tooth decay can be noticed during your check-up, and the filling can be done right away, especially if your dentist feels it is necessary. Other times, you may need to book a separate appointment for your tooth filling.
